Jávea/ Xàbia

Playa la Granadella, Jávea. This beach is a perfect horseshoe-shaped bay at the nature reserve Granadella. The intense blue water, dramatic cliffs and Mediterranean pines make it one of the most beautiful on the Costa Blanca. Cala Portitxol, Jávea. Playa el Arenal, Jávea. Arenal beach is the busiest beach on the Javea coast with fine sand and a slight slope in the shallow waters. Moraira

Playa del Portet, Moraira. One of the most idyllic beaches in the area: a beautiful cove with fine sand and beautiful clear water. Excellent for snorkling and watersports. Services: showers, accessible for disabled people, restaurants & bars, on street parking

Cala Moraig, Moraira. This spectacular beach is not the most accessible beach in Moraira but believes us, it is worth the journey. Breathtaking scenery, dramatic cliffs, and crystal clear water are awaiting you. This beach is perfect if you want to escape the Moraira crowds and enjoy the beach away from built-up areas. The left end of the beach is an unofficial nudist beach so keep that in mind!

Playa Ampolla, Moraira. With soft sand and shallow water, this is the most “family-friendly” beach in Moraira but also the busiest! The little ones can play safely on in the little stream that runs between the Barranc and the sea. They will also enjoy a playground, volleyball nets, shower and toilets as well as sunbed rentals. Benissa

Cala Baladrar, Benissa. A gateway to the Mediterranean. Cala del Baladrar is an increasingly popular cove in Benissa thanks to the views, the quality of the water and the lively beach bar set up there in summer, offering live music while you enjoy a bar snack. Cala la Fustera, Benissa. A charming fine sand beach in Benissa of fine sand surrounded by pine trees and very calm waters which, together with the beach bar, make it the perfect spot to spend a summer’s day… a real paradise on this stretch of the Mediterranean. Cala de l’Advocat, Benissa. A delightful spot on the coastline of Benissa in which to enjoy a relaxing swim, watersports and hiking, almost any day of the year. Made up of pebbles and fine sand which is perfect for children, the calm waters here make L’Advocat the perfect place to spend a full day at the beach, while also enjoying the wonderful undersea world. What to do at the Costa Blanca on a rainy day? Although the Costa Blanca is known for it’s sunny weather, it does rain now and then. As the region is mainly equipped with activities for sunny weather, it might not easy to find a proper activity for bad weather. Here some – maybe unexpected – suggestions:

  1. Tram Alicante. The Alicante tram connects Alicante with Denia by tram. The views yet are worth a visit. Line L1 connects Alicante to Benidorm and L9 Benidorm to Denia. It stops at all stations in between. -> www.tramalacant.es
  2. Valor chocolate museum. In Villajoyosa you’ll find the Valor chocolate museum. Valor is the leading chocolate brand in Spain. If you love chocolate, just go there!
  3. Shopping centre La Marina. The huge shopping mall La Marina in Ondara is worth a visit anyway, but good entertainment for cloudy or rainy days. There also is a cinema, a lot of restaurants and a padel court
  4. Museo Microgigante in Guadalest. A miniature museum everyone will like. When the weather turns better, combine it with the castle and a walk around the reservoir
  5. Cove de les Calaveres Benidoleig. The cave of the skulls is famour for its long history being used as a refuge by Paleolithic man more than 100.000 years ago.

Forget the thematic parcs with expensive rates, queuing and average food. Take your teens and tweens for an unforgettable trip to Jávea (or Xábia in the local dialect Valenciano). With all the outstanding restaurants in the region a daytrip is easily made.

Grape picking in Llíber

LOCAL LIFE

Did you know this? The grape picking in Llíber in the Jalon Valley/ Vall de Pop started last week. Most of the grapes are used to produce wine. Grapes are mainly brought to the two local bodegas in Jalón/ Xaló. But some of the inhabitants of Lliber keep an old tradition alive. They process the grapes into raisins: an old tradition.

In 1472 the Moors living in the Jalon valley sent a selection of wines to the Valencian Court. They negotiated with traders in Javea the sale of a product which, in time, would become the base of Marina Alta’s economy: raisins. The area is now famous for its local wines which belong to the ‘denominación de origen’ of Alicante and raisins are still produced in small quantities.

They harvest the grapes, dip them in boiling water and let them dry for about 30 days. Drying is still done as decades ago: on cane beds outside. When weather requires, the cane beds are taken inside the riuraus. This prevents the grapes of rotting and fungus. Riuraus are old arched buildings made from stone. They protect the grapes from rain but allow the wind going through. The most distinctive riurau is in Jávea/ Xàbia: d’Arnauda.

Most of the sultanas are not eaten by the Spanish, but exported to the United Kingdom. They are still transported as in the past: by boat from Denia.
